The Dog In The Manger

The Dog In The Manger

There once was a dog that lived on a farm. He fell asleep one morning in the manger full of hay. He was awakened by some tired and hungry cattle who had been working in the field. The dog, startled by their presence, snarled and snapped at them, as if the manger will filled with prime rib.

The cattle looked at one another, confused and annoyed. "How selfish he is!" said one. "He can't even eat the hay, yet he won't let us near it and we are so hungry for it."

At that moment, the farmer walked by. When he saw the dog snarling at his hungry cows, he grabbed a stick and walloped him, sending him off yipping, tail tucked.

Moral of the Story: Do not grudge others for that which you cannot enjoy yourself.

The Dog in the Manger: A Modern Fable

There once was an employee, Doug. Doug worked really hard. He tried to do everything on his own without help. He believed everyone should do their own work and that it was weak to get help from others. Doug would book conference rooms for entire days, and when small groups of his coworkers would ask to use it, he would snap back that they should've booked it through the proper channels if they needed it.

Doug would not accept help when his peers noticed he was taking a long time doing tasks manually when there was an automation available. This often caused the team to have to wait on him and making it very difficult to deliver stuff on time. When the team was gathered for happy hours, Doug would always just complain and make things uncomfortable for anyone that was having a nice time. Everyone was relieved when Doug would finally excuse himself.

When the manager caught wind that Doug not only wasn't a collaborator, but worse, he actively made things harder for everyone else, he was terminated. Moral of the Story: Don't be like Doug. Even if you don't share in the joy for certain ways of working, don't ruin it for everyone else who does.
