The Boys & The Frogs

The Boys & The Frogs

One day, some boys were playing at the edge of a pond. Upon catching the sight of some frogs swimming in the shallow water, they began to amuse themselves by pelting them with stones, killing several of them. The frogs had never seen humans before so they had no idea what was happening when it started.

After some time of this happening, one of the few remaining brave frogs put his head out of the water and said to the boys, “oh, stop! Stop, Please! What you think it merely sport is literal death to us!”

Moved by their pleas, the boys felt extreme remorse and guilt. They apologized and left the pond, vowing to never hurt others again. Moral of the story: Our actions can have consequences that affect others negatively, so we must have empathy and understanding towards others.

The Boys & The Frogs: A Modern Fable

A small company, Frogs LLC, was growing. They contracted some consultants to help streamline a few of their operations. The boys from the consultant agency were skilled analysts, but lacked any meaningful work history.

The boys began their analysis and started finding a few positions that had some redundancy. Without a second thought, they recommended slashing those positions. Upon catching wind of these suggestions, the employees in the cross-hairs pleaded earnestly with the manager in the presence of the consultants. "We have been with the company since the very first day! Letting us go is of no consequence to the boys in their job, but this is our entire livelihood." Moved by the employees, the boys worked diligently to help redesign some operational models that would help retrain and redeploy those who had become redundant.

Moral of the Story: Empathy and Understanding is important for managing the people impacts of change management.
