The Ants & The Grasshopper

The Ants & The Grasshopper

One bright day in late autumn, a family of ants was bustling about in the warm sunshine, drying out the grain they had stored up during the summer. A starving grasshopper, his fiddle under his arm, came up and humbly begged for a bite to eat.

"What?!" cried the ants in surprise, "Haven't you stored anything away for the winter? What in the world were you doing all summer?"

"I didn't have time to store up any food," the grasshopper whined. "I was so busy making music that before I knew it the summer was gone."

The ants shrugged their shoulders in disgust.

"Making music, were you.." they scoffed "Very well, now dance!" And they turned their backs on the grasshopper and went on with their work.

The moral of the story: There's a time for work and a time for play.

The Ants & The Grasshopper: A modern fable

One bright day in late summer, a group of friends from highschool were hanging out at the coffee shop. They had each who gone to trade school and had since started working in various fields. They were discussing their jobs and the skills they had developed over the past few years. One of them was even working for himself now.

Meanwhile, another friend, Grace, who taken a different route from her friends, had gone to college. She walked in looking a bit disheveled and worried.

"Hey, Grace!" one of the her friends called out. "How's life after graduation?"

Grace sighed and slumped into a chair. "Honestly, not great. I've been struggling to find a job. I have a degree, but I don't have any real skills that employers are looking for. Can any of you help me out?"

The friends looked at each other in surprise. "What did you do all through college?" one of them asked.

"I spent a lot of time enjoying college life," Grace admitted. "Parties, clubs, and making lots of friends. I thought the degree would be enough to get a job."

The trade school friends shook their heads. "We spent our time learning and honing our trades," one of them said. "We might not have had as much fun, but we have skills that are in demand."

"Without practical skills or experience, it's tough," another added. "You need to show that you can bring something valuable to the table."

Feeling a mix of regret and realization, Grace nodded slowly. "I guess I should have balanced fun with gaining practical skills."

The friends gave Grace ex a reassuring pat on the back. "It's not too late to start learning," one of them said. "But remember, there's a time for work and a time for play."
