Reflections: Tortoise & Hare

It's always a big challenge to remain motivated going into the second week of a new year to keep up with your goals which haven't yet become habit. My father gave me some advice, which I found so closely related to this week's fable:

"Self-discipline is greater than motivation, for the discipline will always be there, even when the motivation isn't."

At home, my wife and I have a newborn now and have a two year old as well. I also just wrapped up a contract at the end of last year and finally have some time at home without putting in 40+ hours a week towards someone else's goals. To put icing on the cake, I'm a bit under the weather (courtesy of my 2-year old's pre-school), and so let me tell you, being disciplined right now is not easy! But I know that it's precisely the times like this that bring the most growth. I like to pair my father's advice with another message that I frequently have said during past coaching engagements;

"You either pay now with self-discipline or you pay for it later. Self-discipline is the price of success"

This site is something I consider my tortoise race. It will take at least a year to reach with only one path to reach it; Self-Discipline. It would be so easy for me to simply take a few weeks off, watch some TV, play some video games, then call some recruiters in a few weeks when I'm ready to start working again, and take another contract, but I'm ready for more in my life. Like many folks out there, I'm working towards the freedom of working for myself eventually, but that process starts right now! So why share all this with you? Because self-discipline doesn't mean we have to do things in isolation. Yes, I'm the one who ultimately has to do the things I am setting out to do, but this community gives us an opportunity to hold each other accountable and keep our finish lines out in the open and to encourage one another to keep it up. I'd love to hear some of your goals this year and help you get on the path the self-discipline with me!
